Not surprisingly, much of our work involves the failure of fasteners. Sometimes we're called by manufacturers or distributors to help them understand why their fasteners failed and what to do about it. However, the majority of our work involving fastener failures is with lawsuits. Here's something interesting on that subject:
Commonly, when a metal fastener breaks the first reaction of a lawyer is to hire an expert metallurgist. And, yes, metallurgists can be helpful in these circumstances. However, beyond metallurgical knowledge, (which we have), a specific, broader understanding of fasteners is much more valuable. This is because a metallurgist doesn't have fastener design experience. They also don't know the complexities involved in manufacturing fasteners. And, they don't have the detailed understanding of the myriad of interactions of fit, finish, and assembly methods used for the products.
Consequently, our record in cases in which the opposing expert was a metallurgist is outstanding.
